How many times a day does your dog poo?

We have just got a 5 month old Lurcher from a rescue centre. The pup isn't house trained, so I've been taking it out into the garden regularly to see if it will 'go'.

She hasn't done anything outside at all, but has wet and soiled inside twice.

I was just wondering about other peoples experiences of this as I am a first time dog owner and could be doing with some advice!!

Thanks :)

How many times a day does your dog poo?
My dog eats her own feces once a while. . .every week. . .
Reply:It depends on how much they eat. My dog will go between 2 - 4 times a day. Although it's not much when she goes. She's only 20lbs but since I've changed her dog food to something with less filler, she's around 2 times. But she can't resist going on a long walk, so it may even be more times. As long as you feed the pup around the same time everyday, you can start to predict when they'll go.
Reply:My Labrador goes twice a day during exercise, and I always pick up after her. Your lurcher will need plenty of exercise every day, and will perform on her walks. Please pick up after her it only takes a minute and is a good habit to get into.
Reply:Ugh, my dog poops several times a day (4 times usually). She only about 3 pounds so I guess its because she has a tiny system. She's very small, but she doesn't soil my carpet so.
Reply:She is probably just nervous.

Get her on a good dog food, I suggest Innova Evo, Canidae, Solid Gold, or Orijen. You can find them at local pet stores, and they cost a bit more, but its cheaper because you feed a lot less. I know many people start feeding a quality food to rescue dog, and they see improvements in just two weeks.
Reply:once in the morning
Reply:A period of both of you getting used to each other I suggest. Dogs are sensitive beings and need time to learn the house rules ..... keep doing what you are doing ... be patient and praise when you get the right result. Perhaps longer walks away from home might encourage bowel evacuation outside?
Reply:twice, book youself in a training session with a 1st time dog instructor
Reply:my dog usuallys does a poo twice a day - morning + evening in its toilet area in the garden

It is depend on what you are feeding you dog , how much exercise it gets - often the more exercise they get the more they go and often little and often
Reply:I feed my dog in the morning and at night, so she only goes two times a day. It depends on how often you feed him.
Reply:iys getting used to ur home in a few weeks it will be fine but they should usally poo in the morning when u get up and before u go bed m dogs go poo at 6-8am and at 10-11pm
Reply:we have had rescue dogs for years and they are all different 5 months is still very mucha puppy and you may not know his history

try taking her out into the garden every hour to the same place she will soon learn you have to be patient with her but it will all be worth the effort in the end

we also have a lurcher and belive it or not a lab with only three paws he was born like that but he is fine he just limps
Reply:depends on how much he eats but on average 2-4
Reply:hes probably still getting used to the new environment. continue house breaking him, and once warmed up and comfortable, or when he cant hold it any longer he will 'go'!
Reply:usually 2-3 times a day.
Reply:A puppy needs normally to poop about 15-20mins after they eat. Pee 15-20mins after they wake up or drink. Adult are about 1hr after eating. With ours we are consistent with the time frame from when they eat and go out and let them wonder around as you say "Go the bathroom" until they do. Now my adult dogs go on command. If we are leaving you let them out, tell them to go the bathroom and if they don't need to they sit and wait until you ask if they are done. Works great.
Reply:once usually
Reply:my dog goes twice a day about 30 minutes to an hour after she eats. Try scheduling your dogs feeding so you know about when it is that it will need to go. Like my dog I get up and feed her at 9 and by 9:45 she is sitting next to the door waiting to be let out.
Reply:that's nothing, i have a beagle and she sh*ts 4-5 times a day, and man sh*ts too....at 5 months if it's happen only twice thats nothing, just part of the learning process. get a fence and have them sit inside of it next to the pee/poop....dont put their face in it.
Reply:Now, one or two times a day, when he was 5 months, it could be even three times a day.
Reply:My dog ( he is a 17 month old American bulldog) goes three times a day; once in the morning, once when the dog walker gets there, and the last when I take him out for a walk in the afternoon.
Reply:our dog was a rescue puppy - just hang in there, you don't know the history with him.

Our dog is fed twice a day now (he is 2 1/2) he goes out first thing in the morning just for a wee. He is fed his 1st meal roughly 9am after all the children have eaten and I am dressed. I then take him with me at 9.30 when we take the baby to playschool - he has a good 30 minute walk and he poops then - bag it up and off home.

He goes out about 3pm for another long walk (after children all home) I take him over waste ground so he has a run around and I take a few treats for him - but no poop as this is a playtime for him.

He eats again in the evening after we have all eaten, he may have a few scraps of any food we have left along with his meal, the hubby then takes him for a walk just after 9pm and he poops again.

Just persevere with him, but I found that as long as I took my dog out within 30 minutes of feeding him he would not mess when we first got him, although as a puppy they eat more regular smaller meals. If you still have problems the Vet is always good to sound off to.
Reply:Mine can go sometimes 2 or 3 times in one day, sometimes only once. It depends on what they've eaten and how much exercise they get on their leads.

However, your boy is still very young, kindness and patience will work wonders. Wait about 15-20 mins after he's eaten, then take him outside, if he performs, praise him. If he happens to do it inside the house, just clean it up with the minimum of fuss, don't scold him, it will only confirm to him that its a way of getting attention.

In my experience, male dogs are faster to house train, so it may only take a few weeks for him to learn to go outside, however be prepared to work with him for a few months before he's reliably trained.

*sorry, just realised you said your pup was a girl. The same rules apply except, I also have female rescue terriers and I have found that they do take a little longer to train - others may disagree. But don't worry, she will get the hang of it eventually and with her being so young still, she'll be easier to train.
Reply:my dogs go to the bathroom 2x
Reply:usually once but sometimes twice

one of my dogs wees and poos when out on our walk(i clean it up)

the other one will hold it untill she gets home and do it in our own garden
Reply:Thank God for people like you that rescued a dog!!!!

Young dogs need to eliminate every two to three hours, so

schedule accordingly. It takes time for them to develop the

muscles required to hold it for an extended amount of time.

Certain activities can also trigger the need to eliminate.

These include naps, playing or anything that gets the puppy

excited. Be sure to go outside after these events.
